(A) John Romita Jr

From the shadow of evil past comes a terrifying new foe! When a bank robber flees from Spider-Man and disappears into the sewers, he finds the long-hidden secret hideout of the wall-crawler's one-time arch-enemy: the Green Goblin! Norman Osborn's secrets could be worth more than the contents of any bank vault - and soon, a shadowy figure takes possession of the costume, the weapons and, of course, the jet-glider! But this mystery menace can't resist putting his own horrific spin on the pernicious persona. The Green Goblin is no more - in his place now stands the Hobgoblin! And so begins one of the most acclaimed Spidey epics of all, courtesy of writer Roger Stern and legendary father-and-son artistic team of John Romita Sr. and John Romita Jr.! It's one of the all-time great Marvel comic books, boldly re-presented in its original form, ads and all!

Reviews

The writer is long time ASM author Roger Stern. The artist is even longer timed pencil pusher John Romita Jr, with inks by his jazzy Jake of a dad.

Why do a facsimile of this issue? Its the first appearance of the Hobgoblin, certainly a major Spidey villain. Having JR ink JR JR gives a specific visual continuity to the book. This isn't junior's best work, but 100% this is where the torch was passed. Dad Romita Sr is THE definitive Green Goblin artist, so to have his son take on the next Goblin era was a perfect way to do that. There's also some tiny hints that maybe junior was more than a clone. There are two panels with Pete on a rooftop casting a shadow over a bank robber trying to escape that are creepy and flat out excellent. You can also see an excellent clinic for quality lettering pre computer by Joe Rosen's steady hand. If you need a little rush, this is a $250.00 book now, so you're basically stealing getting it for $3.99.

I'd have given this a '10', but my copy was missing the Tattooz.
