VERY FINE/NEAR MINT

(W) Gerry Duggan

Going back to the Dark Knight's early days in Gotham City: Batman and Robin, Dick Grayson, face down the coldest winter Gotham City has ever seen. A winter so cold that Mr. Freeze, Victor Fries, no longer needs his containment suit to survive; he is in an element where he can thrive. Robin empathizes with Mr. Freeze, all Freeze wants to do is save his wife, Nora--but Batman warns Robin not to give his empathy to Victor Fries. He's a man who decided his own fate a long time ago and he deserves none of our warmth. And this winter... he will show his true wickedness and power. The powerhouse creative team of bestselling writer GERRY DUGGAN (X-Men, Deadpool, Arkham Manor) and MATTEO SCALERA (WHITE KNIGHT PRESENTS: HARLEY QUINN, Black Science) brings you Mr. Freeze's most frigid story yet.

Reviews

Consider this a Two-Face review for this book, because I'm of two minds about it.

Two Face: In spite of the Christmas underpinnings, this book doesn't give, it takes. What it takes is a villain origin story that has led to many a frozen tear and snow globe tattoo, and changes it in two ways (heh). Maybe we don't ALL know the story of Victor Fries, his sick wife Nora, and his efforts to save her through advanced cryogenics, but yeah, we all know that. That means to change that up, there's an ugly spin that has to take place and MAN is it ugly. What was a charming fairy tale of sacrifice and sorrow is turned up on end to fit among the lowest of the low of today. It is depressing. The timing of Kevin Conroy's death certainly has the many animated versions of Mr. Freeze going thru my head, where hopeless romantic became helpless husband. This story certainly starts with that premise, and effectively tears down that artifice, framing, and eventually the foundation. I give it a 4/10 Grahams

Harvey: This is the best looking Batman book in years. The cartooning of Matteo Scalera mixes elements of Kelley Jones, Sean Murphy, Frank Quietly into something original, effective, and impactful, SO MUCH SO that I have no choice but to recommend this book to anyone who enjoys quality comic art. 10/10, probably 11/10. I've gone back and re-read it three times.

Ok, so the gentlemen of DentTown have spoken, 4 plus 10 is 14, divided by two is 7, so this must be a 7/10 Graham book, right?

No, the art simply cannot be missed, so the art is now a 14! out of 10, the book is a 9, and I'm going to go back and pour over it again right now.

Kevin Healy 9 out of 10 GRAHAMS
