City of Bane' begins! Bane's minions have moved into Gotham City, taken control and are ruling with an iron fist-including rounding up any villain who refuses to sign onto Bane's program-and Batman is nowhere to be found. At least not the Batman anyone knows. It's like someone has replaced the real Gotham City with a twisted funhouse-mirror version of it. Meanwhile, the real Bruce Wayne is on a spiritual quest to regain his fighting spirit after his showdown with his father in the desert. Can the people of Gotham hold on until their protector is strong enough to come to their rescue? Plus, what does Lex Luthor's scheming mean for Gotham City when Bane and the villains are already in control? This extra-sized anniversaryersary issue kicks off a new multi-part storyline that ties together all the threads of the first 74 issues of Tom King's epic BATMAN run!

Hello Bat.

You escaped your father-not-father in the previous issue. Seemingly left him for dead in a pit while some repetition went on around you. It was all very 'good' Tom King, you see, throwbacks, call-outs, and the like. Yet here we find you...off. Broken. Again. Your father, that rapscallion, back in Gotham, back in Gotham as the Bat...well, you can see how that might be confusing. I'm sure you're carrying a secret 22 pages around that will explain how that might be, your cape grabbed from behind while someone Flashier and more Pointed throws you and your John Thomas Wayne back down. Yes, this must be, because this is what is. That would fully explain your circumstances now, so far outside the city of Bane.

Would such a thing to be true...oh, the wonders of it. It would mean we could all revisit this place, this folded cavern where so many wonderful things have happened. Perhaps these 22 pages were taken from you, a portion of the 330 lost to publisher decisions and a lack of editorial fortitude. Perhaps Bane has broken more than one back given the spinelessness of that decision. Perhaps.

Perhaps it is best to look at this then not as a continuation, but a beginning. These stories have all had beginnings to find out where they fit, haven't they Bat?

Have you heard there's a new Robin? I'm beginning to think she's not the only new thing in the book.
