From out of the vault comes Terry McGinnis, a.k.a. Batman from the Batman Beyond animated series. The TV shows had an edgy, pessimistic feel to them, as an elderly and retired Bruce Wayne finds himself training a high school kid, who’s proficient in hi-tech and lives with his mom and kid brother. The TV series was mainly set in its own universe, seemingly, though this series attempts to remedy it by having the Hush storyline remerge with this cast. Admittedly I wasn’t fond of the TV series at first, but it grew on me, especially as the more metallic and wasteful the future world engulfs you (See Batman/Superman Annual #4 for even more Terry and this oh-so-depressing future), though the oasis of his immediate family casts it all aside. This miniseries is a welcome return to the animated show, with fine artwork and a powerful, yet unknown villain. And, from the history of Batman sidekicks, it’s a guess what will eventually become of Terry; will he eventually be killed off, or will he be IT, the next Batman? With Batman Beyond leaking from the woodworks of DC right now, we may know sooner than we think.
