REVIEW by Brian Fisher

I’ve been complaining about Grant Morrison’s writing a lot lately, what with the incomprehensible Final Crisis and the off-the-wall gonzo-ness of Batman. But I think with Superman Beyond he’s back in familiar territory doing what he does best. And what he does best is kooky speculative fiction. And there’s no better character that he writes than Superman. Superman Beyond conveniently takes place in between moments during Final Crisis, and with time stopped there’s really no room for anyone to complain about the story not fitting into continuity. He’s on an errand from the Monitors to save the Multiverse and he’s got a motley crew of Supermen from other worlds tagging along. What he does here is brilliant, introducing the Bleed from the Authority into regular DC continuity (remember, kids, the WIldstorm universe is now an official part of the Multiverse) and taking design elements from other potential Earths and crossing them over into different Earths (that symbol on Earth-4 Superman’s forehead looks an awful lot like the symbol on Dr. Manhattan’s forehead). Morrison does great science and speculative fiction and puts all his talents in those areas up front for this book. And, bonus, it’s in 3-D!

I give it 9 out of 10 Grahams
