Matt Wagner is hitting his stride. The issues of this series have built upon Madame Xanadu’s curiosity, and how she is out to uncover the mystery of The Phantom Stranger, as well as her need to help. Wagner has grown this intense, but pacifist, female character (far different than Grendel), and I’m always wowed by Amy Reeder Hadley’s art. After the jump from Jack The Ripper’s England, in last issue, we now find ourselves near the modern era, as the world prepares for WWII. And the Madame closes in on getting an answer to her question. You’re missing something special if you’re not reading this book.
