New Mutants is the second best of the next X-men titles to spew like magma from the Krakoa fountain. Not very surprising, as this one actually has Hickman's name in the credits, instead of just signing off on something like a truck stop gas station attendant. The art, provided by Rod Reis, makes it clear that if Bill Sienkiewicz perishes in an accident, volcanic or otherwise, there will be a halfway decent version of him arting about. It also benefits from removing the cast from all of the other Krakoa-huggers. It's clearly connected to all of the other goings-on, but it has it's own retro (but not too retro) vibe. Think of it as a way to wash Excalibur from your eyeball palate. Highly recommended for those who really enjoyed the recent New Mutants War Children special. readers who think that Illyana can basically do no wrong, and editors who can't afford to get Bill Sienkiewicz. Also, you'll probably agree that it's odd that the team member named Magma seems to be missing from the team that now actually lives in a volcano.
