Steve McNiven channels his inner Barry Windsor Smith in 'Return of Wolverine' #1, a perfect choice given the character. There are pages that would fit in a retelling of Weapon X. That's not what we're getting here. Charles Soule has a bunch of teases up his sleeveses, and you may not have any idea what's happening until the last 2 pages.

The art is the strength of the book then, and it more than carries it. Based on the art alone, it would get a ten except...McNiven is only drawing the bookends for the series. For a prestige book, anything is going to be a step down no matter how good the substitute is (we're looking at you, Justice League and Jim Cheung). It would be in Marvel's best, very best, considerably best interest to have someone this good start a book this important with enough lead time to draw the whole thing.

COUNTERPOINT REVIEW:

Man I wish this was drawn by Barry Windsor Smith. Or Steve McNiven. Either would be better than whatever this is. It reminds me of when Jim Lee "tried" being Frank Miller on Deathblow. All four artists are great in there own ways, there is no need to ape poorly someone else. Then add on top of that an extremely overused "missing memory Wolverine" story that is even more confusing to the reader than Logan. This should be titled "Return of why Wolverine was canceled in the first place."
