Here's a thing, it occurred to me that I've been writing about this industry and the books it produces since 1995, and I'm pretty sure that I never thought Superman was the best book of any of the 1,456 weeks since then. I could be wrong as I'm told I may or may not have been operating on impulse power that decade. However, if you put a David Cronenberg body horror Superman issue in front of me, I'm afraid it has to happen. In fact, I'm pretty sure that we're seeing the old Joseph Campbell hero story told in reverse, in that we've seen Superman go into a cave in Warworld and come out very different. Only this time instead of coming out a hero, he came out less than god-like. It's an aces story arc for a character I don't really love, but it's fresh enough that it's the book I read first this week. Highly recommended for everybody who would like to feel like they got a whole story in a single issue, those who always knew that the Parasite was just inherently creepy, and anyone who wants to see the most unlikely gift being given in a comic book.
