I am starting to suspect that an formerly inconceivable event might happen in my lifetime. Listen kids, I've seen some stuff. I would have thought I was done when telephones became able to play Asteroids. I did not think I'd maybe live to see DC become the dominant comic publisher again, but I wonder if it could happen.
So yeah, Superman #1 is that good.
See kids, it takes a long time to turn a big ship. As Mark Waid tries to softly reboot as quickly as he must, I'm guessing that Lazarus Planet will eventually be remembered as the very last chunk of the Didio era leaving the building. But wait! there's more!
I've started to see some editorial tricks happening in the DC line. Stuff like maybe having the comics relate to each other. Stuff like making sure that a single issue leaves the reader satisfied but still wanting more. You know, the stuff they used to do when they were published as magazines, and not spat out as tiny bits of trade paperbacks. Stuff like Black Label, which is just Vertigo for superheroes, which is a good idea. Stuff like mentioning that you still publish comics at the end of your film trailer on Youtube. It's almost as if an outside company came in and asked, "When was the last time these pamphlets of yours sold?" The answer being, "Pretty much the late '80's, I guess." "Then make them like that again, you dolts.", said the Corporate Entity that grew so big because say what you will, it gives customers what they want.
I want more books like this issue of Superman, and whatever comes next. Highly recommended.
