Verily, I must say I was apprehensive about this new Thor mini-series,
but was pleasantly surprised in the end. The basic initial story has the
Asgardians battling frost giants, but their ensuing victory rings hollow
as they survey the civilian deaths caused by the melee. Later, the gods
quarrel amongst themselves, debating the merits of far-flung wars against
rebel nations while Asgard is slowly withering away at home. It’s hard
not to draw parallels to our current entanglements overseas, and I found
it refreshing to a see a comic tackle some more complex and challenging
issues than a costume change. Also, some editor finally wised up and
turned up the dimmer switch on Simone Bianchi’s typically murky
pencils, and with a brighter color scheme I would say this is the best
art of his career. For once, we have a Marvel book that feels worth the
$3.99.
