Unworthy Thor #1

Nick Fury, I mean 'The Unseen', tells the Odinson of the existence of another hammer to take the place of Mjolnir. This happens three months before the start of this issue. The series itself is what follows. Brought to you by Jason Aaron (my second favorite Thor writer ever) and Olivier Coipel, this book could be called The Lesser of Two Thors (*three by the end). It's good, so don't let these next bits get you down. It's not Mighty Thor good. It's not Thor God of Thunder Good. Lots of times, that's the case. It has all the tropes, all the pieces- we have Toothgnasher, mean, and even Ulik for Odin's sake- but the problem is that we have them just to drive home the Odinson's depression. It's all just exposition, even if its exposition with things we already love. The same goes for the end of the issue, which feels like one of the rare occasions of 'that's great, but...'.


Coipel provides excellent visual storytelling, but his style seems a little softer in places, specifically with notes of Simone Bianchi and Russell Dauterman- curvier, cleaner contours where there used to be angled lines and harder edges. It's shiny, but maybe too shiny?


One final question...if the Odinson is unworthy to have the power of Thor with one hammer, why does he think a different hammer is going to make a difference. Unworthy is unworthy, right? Talk to a horse (of course of course) about this next issue.
